They sell tomatoes, pepper but sponsor children abroad

A Nigerian lady has sparked discussions online after comparing the financial realities of Nigerian market traders with those of some corporate workers.

The young woman, identified on X as @ChisomAgbafor, shared her observation about Nigerian market traders and questioned the common perception of who is considered financially poor.

In a post on X, she expressed surprise at hearing some traders reveal that they had successfully trained several children through university despite working in seemingly petty businesses.

‘They have trained three children through university’- Lady Alleges

According to the lady, some traders she encounters while shopping have disclosed that they have funded the education of their children, with some even claiming to have sponsored their children to study abroad.

She wrote:

“There is something shocking I’ve discovered about Nigerian market people:

These people will be selling tomatoes and pepper in the market and casually tell me that they have trained 3 children through university. Some will even boldly tell me that they sponsored their children abroad.”

The observation led her to compare the financial experiences of these traders with those of people working corporate jobs.

She noted that some employees with seemingly attractive salaries still struggle with their personal expenses and may find it difficult to support a family.

‘So who exactly is poor?’ – Lady Asks

The lady pointed out that earning a high salary does not necessarily translate into financial comfort, particularly when living expenses and other responsibilities are taken into account.

She wrote:

“Meanwhile, somebody with a good corporate 9-5 job earning A$500k is struggling to feed themselves, talk less of training three children.

“So who exactly is poor?”
