Nigeria has begun strategic preparations for the 2027 Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Mutual Evaluation, with the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and the Federal Ministry of Justice leading a nationwide stocktake to assess the country’s readiness.
The exercise comes after Nigeria’s exit from the FATF Grey List in 2025 and marks a shift from meeting technical compliance requirements to demonstrating measurable results in tackling financial crimes.
Attorney-General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said the country’s success in the evaluation would depend on its ability to show tangible outcomes in detecting illicit financial flows, dismantling criminal networks, prosecuting offenders and recovering proceeds of crime.
NFIU Chief Executive Officer, Hafsat Abubakar Bakari, also stressed that “effectiveness, institutional integrity and measurable outcomes will define Nigeria’s success in the global fight against money laundering, terrorism financing and other financial crimes.”
The 2027 FATF Mutual Evaluation will assess the effectiveness of Nigeria’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing framework, with authorities seeking to sustain the gains recorded since the country’s removal from the Grey List.
