Nigeria Condemns Houthi Attack on Saudi Civilians

The Federal Government has condemned the recent attack by the Houthis against civilian targets in Saudi Arabia’s Najran Region, describing the incident as a violation of international humanitarian law.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, on Friday, said the attack resulted in injuries to several civilians, including women and children.

Nigeria said the incident was a “flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the fundamental principles of the protection of civilians in times of conflict.”

The government also expressed concern over the escalating hostilities between the Houthis in Yemen and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, urging all parties to exercise restraint and comply with international law.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria reaffirms its unwavering rejection of the escalation of violence in the region,” the statement said.

It added that attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure were unacceptable, regardless of the party responsible.

“Attacks that deliberately target civilian populations and civilian infrastructure, irrespective of the perpetrator, are unacceptable and must be unequivocally condemned by the international community,” the ministry said.

Nigeria called on all parties to prioritise the protection of civilians and intensify diplomatic efforts towards resolving the conflict peacefully.

The government urged stakeholders to work towards a “peaceful and sustainable resolution” that respects the sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of all states in the region.
