NEMA, NSEMA Assess Flood Damage In Niger Communities

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) have assessed the damage caused by flash flooding in several communities in Chanchaga Local Government Area of Niger State.

The assessment, conducted on Saturday, covered Dusen Kura Hausa, Fadikwai, Bajago, Anguwan Daji and MI Wushishi Estate, where heavy rainfall triggered flooding that damaged homes, businesses, farmland and other properties.

The agencies said the flooding was caused mainly by heavy rainfall, compounded by inadequate drainage infrastructure and the overflow of stormwater.

“Several residential buildings and perimeter fences were damaged or destroyed, while shops, a bakery, livestock and farmlands were also affected.”

A culvert was also impacted, disrupting movement for motorists and pedestrians, although no deaths or injuries were recorded.

The assessment team, led by NEMA Senior Emergency Officer, Search and Rescue, Shaibu Salifu, and NSEMA Director of Relief and Rehabilitation, Yusuf Lemo, identified immediate relief assistance as a priority for severely affected households.

“NEMA and NSEMA consequently recommended the provision of immediate relief assistance to severely affected households, particularly those whose homes and livelihoods suffered significant damage.”

The agencies also called for the rehabilitation of drainage channels and culverts, recovery support for affected farmers and businesses, improved early-warning systems and increased public awareness on flood preparedness.

They urged residents living in identified high-risk areas to comply with official directives and relocate to safer locations where necessary.

“NEMA and NSEMA reaffirmed their commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to strengthen disaster preparedness and reduce the impact of future flooding in vulnerable communities across Niger State.”
