NDI-ABAT Calls For Investigation Of Dino Melaye Over ‘Venezuela’ Remark

The Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu 2027 Forum (NDI-ABAT) has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to investigate a statement attributed to former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye concerning the ongoing controversy involving President Bola Tinubu.

The group alleged that Melaye made a reference to Venezuela while commenting on allegations involving the President, “Venezuela will happen in Nigeria” describing the reported remark as provocative and potentially capable of heightening political tension in the country.

In a statement issued on Thursday, NDI-ABAT urged the authorities to establish the context, intent and implications of the statement and determine whether it violated any Nigerian law.

The statement was signed by the forum’s National Coordinator, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Chairman of its Board of Trustees, Dimm Uchechukwu Nnam Okwukwu.

The group argued that Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected, stressing that political disagreements and criticism of government policies should remain within the framework of constitutional democracy.

According to NDI-ABAT, any statement that could reasonably be interpreted as encouraging foreign intervention in Nigeria’s internal affairs should be examined by the appropriate authorities.

The forum therefore called for the immediate arrest and investigation of Melaye, while urging law enforcement agencies to take any appropriate legal action if an offence is established.

“ARREST SENATOR DINO MELAYE,” the group demanded, while insisting that the circumstances surrounding the reported statement should be thoroughly investigated.

Group Warns Against Inflammatory Political Statements

NDI-ABAT said opposition activities, political disagreements and criticism of elected officials were legitimate aspects of democratic governance.

However, it maintained that political actors should exercise caution when making statements relating to national security, sovereignty, and the stability of the country.

The group said Nigeria was a sovereign state governed by constitutional institutions and the rule of law, adding that disputes over political leadership should be resolved through democratic and legal processes.

“Nigeria’s democratic future cannot be shaped by inflammatory remarks, political provocation or appeals that could undermine confidence in the nation’s institutions,” the forum said.

It added that political leaders and other public figures should recognise the potential consequences of statements touching on national security.

“All political actors must understand that words carry consequences, especially when they relate to national security and the stability of the country,” it said.

NDI-ABAT Predicts Tinubu Victory in 2027

The forum also expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would secure another term in office at the 2027 presidential election.

NDI-ABAT attributed its prediction to what it described as the administration’s record in infrastructure development, security, accountability and the fight against corruption.

The group maintained that Nigerians would ultimately determine the country’s leadership through the ballot box.

It said the 2027 presidential election should be decided by voters based on the policies, performance and achievements of the various candidates rather than through external pressure or destabilising narratives.

The forum consequently appealed to political parties, candidates, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to prioritise peace, responsible political engagement and respect for Nigeria’s constitutional processes.
