The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commissioned a reconstructed runway and military apron in Rivers State to boost aircraft deployment, operational readiness and security operations across the South-South region.

The facilities were commissioned on Thursday, 27 August 2026, by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke.

Aneke said the upgraded infrastructure would improve aircraft turnaround, maintenance and operational efficiency, while strengthening surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.

He commended the Rivers State Government, led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, for funding and supporting the reconstruction, describing the intervention as a significant contribution to national defence.

“The facilities will enhance operational readiness, surveillance and reconnaissance, while enabling faster aircraft deployment against evolving security threats.”

He said the improved facilities would support operations against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, piracy, organised crime and illegal bunkering.

The CAS added that the infrastructure would also improve the NAF’s capacity for humanitarian assistance, medical evacuation, search-and-rescue missions and disaster response.

Aneke also acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and other stakeholders who contributed to the completion of the project.

He said the development underscored the NAF’s commitment to building a stronger, more agile and capable force to support peace, security and national development.
