Jorge Messi, father and longtime representative of Argentina captain Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68, according to multiple Argentine media reports.
Jorge had reportedly been battling health problems for some time, with his condition becoming a subject of public attention after Lionel Messi became emotional following Argentina’s World Cup match against Algeria in June.
After scoring in the game, the Inter Miami forward was asked about his tears and said: “Why was I crying? It had absolutely nothing to do with football. I have had a few difficult days.”
The comments prompted speculation about the condition of his father, with several media outlets linking the emotional moment to Jorge’s health.

According to Goal. com, the Messi family subsequently addressed the reports, confirming that Jorge was receiving medical care while appealing to the public and media to respect the family’s privacy.
“The Messi family wishes to inform you that Jorge Messi is currently dealing with health problems. He is currently under medical supervision and is recovering well,” the family said at the time.
The family also criticised what it described as insensitive reports and speculation surrounding Jorge’s condition.
“Given the reports, rumours and speculation that have been circulating in recent hours, the family wishes to express its deep concern about the lack of sensitivity, respect and discretion with which some people have treated a strictly private family matter,” the statement said.
It added: “We sincerely appreciate the expressions of affection, respect and concern we have received and ask that the privacy, confidentiality and personal space of Jorge – and that of his entire family – be respected throughout this process.”
Lionel Messi later missed the Major League Soccer All-Star Game at the end of July, with reports suggesting he had travelled to be with his father.
He subsequently returned to action for Inter Miami in an MLS fixture before the latest reports of Jorge’s death emerged.
Jorge Messi played a central role in managing his son’s career as Lionel progressed from his early years in Argentina to becoming one of the most decorated footballers in the world.
