Kano Gov Approves Salary Increase for Staff of Two State Varsities

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved a new salary structure for academic and non-academic staff of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, and Northwest University, Kano.

The new remuneration package, adopted from the salary structure recently implemented by the Federal Government for staff of federal universities, will take effect from January 2026, with payment scheduled to commence in September.

The governor’s spokesman, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, August 10.

According to the statement, the approval followed the recommendations of a committee constituted by the State Executive Council to review requests by the two institutions for the domestication of the new salary package.

The new salary review will cost the state government N391.85 million monthly and N4.70 billion annually for the two universities.

At Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, the monthly financial implication is N228.20 million, comprising N141.08 million for academic staff under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) agreement and N87.11 million for non-academic staff under the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

For Northwest University, the monthly cost is N163.65 million, with N112.24 million allocated to academic staff and N51.41 million for non-academic staff.

The government also approved the inclusion of N1.57 billion in the 2026 Supplementary Budget to cover salary payments from September to December 2026.

The statement added that arrears amounting to N3.13 billion, covering January to August 2026, would be provided for in the 2027 Budget.

The committee said the salary review was aimed at “ensuring industrial harmony and improving the welfare of staff of the two institutions,” while aligning the universities with the new remuneration package applicable to federal and other state-owned universities.

Yusuf also approved the consideration of visitation panels for the two universities and other tertiary institutions in the state.

According to the government, the panels would strengthen “accountability, administration and effective management” of the institutions in line with relevant laws.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and strengthening the quality of higher education as part of its broader investment in human capital development.
