Imo APC Appeals To Striking Imo University Lecturers To Resume Work

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter of the of the lmo state University, Owerri, to resume work by calling off its indefinite strike for the sake of innocent students.
The party said the strike action has led to the disruption of scheduled examination by the university, and the shutting down of academic activities in the university.
The APC stated that it recognises and respects the rights of labour unions to use legitimate industrial strategies to attract the attention of government to issues affecting its members, but advised the union to exhaust all avenues for the peaceful resolution of its demands with the state government.
This was contained in a statement issued on Monday night, by it state Publicity Secretary of the party, Onwuasoanya Jones and made available to newsmen in Owerri.

“The party does not disregard the ASUU’s demand as inappropriate, but wishes to draw the attention of our comrades to the fact that out of the over 63 state universities in the country, only about six states have either begun the process of implementing the agreement or have fully implemented same.
“Consequently, about 90 percent of states are yet to implement this agreement. We assure them that they shall get all that is due to them, in due course.
“We understand that due to the governor’s known pro-labour biases, the ASUU-IMSU expected that they would be among the first to benefit from this APC led federal government initiative.
“However, our comrades must understand that, our governor will always have their best interests at heart. Imo will certainly not be left behind in anything good, especially, when it has to do with workers’ welfare and the educational advancement of our children,” the party said.
The APC therefore pleaded with the leadership and members of ASUU-IMSU to return to the classroom, conclude the conduct of the scheduled examination, while they continue negotiations with the state government, to ensure a mutually beneficial resolution of all outstanding issues that led to the strike action.
