Ibom Air To Expand Fleet, As Akwa Ibom Acquires Airbus A220-300

The Akwa Ibom State government has announced plans to expand the fleet of its state-owned airline, Ibom Air, with the acquisition of an Airbus A220-300 aircraft.
Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Uyo, stating that a delegation of the state government would travel to Montreal, Canada, to conclude the documentation for the purchase.
According to Umanah, the new aircraft is expected to arrive at Victor Attah International Airport on August 30, 2026, increasing Ibom Air’s fleet to 10 aircraft.
He described the acquisition as a significant milestone for Akwa Ibom’s aviation sector, noting that it aligns with the state government’s ambition of positioning the state as a major aviation hub for business, tourism and investment.
The commissioner also identified tourism as a key driver of the state’s economy beyond crude oil revenues, stressing that the government remained committed to developing the sector and unlocking its economic potential.

Umanah said the expansion of Ibom Air would improve air connectivity, strengthen links for businesses and families, and create new opportunities for young people seeking careers in the aviation industry.
He added that the arrival of the Airbus A220-300 would further demonstrate the state government’s commitment to enhancing connectivity, supporting investment and driving sustainable economic growth.
The planned acquisition is expected to further strengthen Ibom Air’s position as a key component of Akwa Ibom’s transportation and economic development strategy.
