Five killed in fatal head-on collision on Lagos Badagry expressway

Five men have reportedly died following a fatal road crash involving a Toyota Camry and an Iveco truck at Sawmill, near Mowo Bus Stop, along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, with the vehicles identified as a Toyota Camry with registration number FKJ 630KS and an Iveco truck bearing registration number T28081 LA.

According to the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA received a distress call about the crash at approximately 5:16am.

He said the agency immediately mobilised its Dolphin Team from the Igando Base to the scene, where responders confirmed that the two vehicles had been involved in a fatal head-on collision.

Preliminary findings indicated that the crash may have resulted from excessive speed and reckless driving by the driver of the Toyota Camry.

According to the agency, the driver reportedly lost control while travelling along the expressway, crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the approaching Iveco truck.

“Regrettably, the impact of the collision resulted in the death of five adult males who were occupants of the Toyota Camry,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.

He added that emergency responders recovered the bodies of the victims and handed them over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, for further action.

The rescue operation involved personnel from LASEMA’s Dolphin Team, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASTMA, the FRSC and officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Morogbo Division.

To prevent further disruption to traffic, LASEMA deployed two tow trucks to remove the damaged vehicles from the expressway.

“The recovery operation was successfully concluded, and the vehicles were taken to Morogbo Police Division. The road has since been cleared and fully reopened to vehicular movement,” the agency said.

Oke-Osanyintolu expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads.

He particularly warned drivers against speeding, dangerous overtaking and other unsafe driving practices, stressing that such behaviour could have fatal consequences, especially during periods of reduced visibility in the early hours.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility and adherence to traffic regulations remains critical to saving lives on Lagos roads,” he said.

LASEMA reiterated its commitment to providing rapid emergency response and working with other agencies to protect lives and property across Lagos State.
