EXPLAINER: How Super Falcons Can Still Qualify for 2027 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s Super Falcons still have a route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s Women’s World Cup in Brazil despite missing out on an automatic qualification ticket at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

FIFA’s qualification format provides Africa with four automatic World Cup places through WAFCON, while two other African teams will have the opportunity to qualify through the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Play-Off Tournament. The final three World Cup places will be decided through that intercontinental tournament.

For the Super Falcons, the route to Brazil is now more complicated and could stretch until February 2027.

Here is how Nigeria can qualify:

1. Beat South Africa in the African play-off

The first hurdle for Nigeria is South Africa.

The Super Falcons must defeat the Banyana Banyana in their upcoming African play-off match on Thursday to remain in contention for a place at the 2027 World Cup.

A victory would keep Nigeria’s qualification hopes alive and take them into the next stage of the process.

A defeat, however, would end the Falcons’ hopes of reaching the World Cup through this route.

2. Qualify for the inter-confederation play-offs

If Nigeria overcome South Africa, the Falcons will progress to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Play-Off Tournament.

The tournament will be played across two windows, with the first phase scheduled for November and December 2026.

The inter-confederation play-off tournament will feature 10 teams from the six FIFA confederations and will determine the final three teams to qualify for the World Cup.

Africa will have two representatives in the tournament.

3. Finish among the top two

Simply reaching the inter-confederation play-offs will not be enough for Nigeria.

The Super Falcons must perform strongly in the first phase of the tournament and finish among the top two teams to advance to the final phase.

This is an important distinction because the first phase is not simply a straightforward three-match knockout tournament for Nigeria.

Six teams will compete in the opening phase, while the four highest-ranked teams among the remaining participants will receive byes into the final phase.

The top two teams from the opening phase will then join those four teams in the final phase.

4. Win the final play-off in February 2027

If Nigeria finish among the top two in the first phase, the Falcons will advance to the final stage of the inter-confederation play-offs in February 2027.

The six teams at this stage will be divided into three knockout paths.

Each path will produce one winner, meaning three teams will qualify for the 2027 World Cup from this final phase.

For Nigeria, that means the Falcons must win their decisive final play-off match to secure their World Cup ticket.

So, while it is being described as a three-match route, the exact number of games Nigeria will play in the inter-confederation tournament depends on the structure of the opening phase and the Falcons’ results.

What is certain is that Nigeria must first defeat South Africa, then survive the November/December phase by finishing in the required top-two position, before winning their final knockout match in February 2027.

The 2027 Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Brazil from June 24 to July 25, 2027, with 32 teams participating.

For the Super Falcons, the automatic route may have closed, but their World Cup dream remains alive. They now have to take the longer route and win when it matters most.
