Chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has called on opposition parties in Osun State to unite behind Governor Ademola Adeleke ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
Momodu made the call in a statement posted on his X handle on Tuesday, August 11, titled, “Why Governor Adeleke Deserves a Second Term.”
The former presidential aspirant said he joined the ADC because of its coalition of opposition forces against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which he accused of undermining Nigeria’s economy, social cohesion, religious tolerance and democratic institutions.
Momodu, however, acknowledged that the coalition had not developed as he initially hoped, but said the current situation in Osun required opposition parties to put aside their differences and work together.
“The time has now come for us to confront REALITY and demonstrate that we indeed possess commonsense by being demonstrably practical,” he said.
According to him, the political situation in Osun had made it necessary for opposition parties to support Adeleke, who is contesting on the platform of the Accord Party, rather than risk splitting their votes.
“It would be foolhardy not to see that with the manner OSUN State has turned into a theater of war, the only sensible STRATEGY is for all opposition parties to align immediately and back the ACCORD party candidate GOVERNOR ADEMOLA ADELEKE,” Momodu said.
He stressed that his endorsement was not influenced by his relationship with Adeleke or the governor’s family.
“I make this declaration without equivocation, or any fear of contradiction. This is not based on friendship or family ties,” he said.
Momodu described Adeleke as a widely popular governor who, he claimed, could defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a popularity contest.
“Governor Adeleke has been a global phenomenon who would easily defeat President Tinubu himself in a popularity contest,” he said.
He also praised Adeleke’s performance in several sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, education, workers’ welfare, agriculture, commerce, culture and youth development.
“Adeleke is primus inter pares amongst Nigerian Governors, in order of extraordinary performance in infrastructure, health, education, staff welfare, labour unions, IGR, agriculture, commerce, culture, women empowerment, youth integration, etc,” Momodu said.
The ADC chieftain further warned opposition parties against actions that could weaken their collective chances in the election.
