Bezos-led Consortium Advances Talks To Buy 30% Stake In

A consortium involving Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos has reportedly advanced discussions to acquire about a 30 percent minority stake in Liverpool Football Club, potentially bringing one of the world’s wealthiest businessmen into the ownership structure of the Premier League club.

The group is led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia and includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, according to reports.

Liverpool’s current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), confirmed last month that the consortium has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in the club.

Bhatia, who is the son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, previously served as a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers for 18 years before giving up his stake in the Championship club last month.

Bezos, 62, founded Amazon and stepped down as the company’s chief executive in 2021, although he remains executive chairman and retains an eight percent stake in the company.

Forbes estimates his fortune at about $256 billion, making him one of the world’s richest people.

The potential investment would add another high-profile billionaire to Liverpool’s ownership picture. FSG acquired the club in 2010 for about £300 million and later sold a minority stake to sports investment firm Dynasty Equity.

The interest comes as Liverpool continues to strengthen its financial position. The club became the highest-earning Premier League club for the first time in Deloitte’s annual analysis in January.

Liverpool subsequently announced record revenue of £703 million for the 2024–25 financial year, underlining the commercial strength of the Anfield club.

While FSG has not indicated that it intends to sell control of Liverpool, the reported 30 percent investment would represent a significant financial commitment from the consortium.

For Bezos, the move could mark a major step into football ownership after previous links with American sports.

The Amazon founder was previously associated with potential investments in the Washington Commanders and the Seattle Seahawks, but neither resulted in a deal.

If the Liverpool discussions result in an agreement, Bezos and his partners would become significant minority investors in one of the world’s most valuable and globally recognised football clubs.
