Barcelona have confirmed that midfielder Gavi did not suffer a serious injury after being substituted during Sunday’s 5-0 victory over Elche in their La Liga opener.
The club said in a statement on its official website on Monday that Gavi took a knock to his right knee during the match, prompting concerns among the coaching staff and supporters after he was forced off.
“Gavi took a knock to his right knee during yesterday’s game,” Barcelona said.
“Medical tests carried out this morning have confirmed that it’s only a bruise — so he’s expected to return to training shortly.”
The initial concern surrounding the midfielder was heightened because of his previous history of a serious knee injury, with fears among fans and members of the coaching staff that he could have suffered another anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

However, medical examinations carried out on Monday ruled out a serious problem, with the club confirming that the injury is limited to a bruise.
The positive update comes as a relief to Barcelona, who began their title defence in emphatic fashion by defeating Elche 5-0 at the weekend.
Gavi was substituted during the second half of the commanding victory, but Barcelona’s medical assessment has now eased concerns over his condition.
The midfielder is expected to resume training shortly, keeping him on course to return to action once he has fully recovered from the knock.
Barcelona’s comprehensive victory over Elche saw them make an impressive start to their La Liga campaign, while Gavi’s latest medical update provides further encouragement for the Catalan club ahead of their next fixture.
