Algeria and Morocco have secured places at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil after both nations won their quarter-final matches at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Algeria reached the tournament for the first time in their history after overturning an early deficit to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1, while Morocco eliminated defending champions South Africa by the same scoreline.

Their victories sent both North African nations into the WAFCON semi-finals, guaranteeing their automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup.

Algeria fell behind in the 30th minute when Ines Konan gave Côte d’Ivoire the lead, but the Ivorians were reduced to 10 players before the interval after N’Sira Ouedraogo was sent off for a dangerous challenge on goalkeeper Chloe N’Gazi.

The numerical advantage helped Algeria turn the game around after the break. Ines Khiri levelled in the 58th minute with a looping finish before Amira Braham completed the comeback six minutes later with a long-range effort into the bottom-right corner.

The victory earned Algeria their maiden appearance at the Women’s World Cup.

Morocco also secured a second consecutive World Cup appearance after defeating South Africa 2-1 in their quarter-final encounter.

Sakina Ouzraoui opened the scoring in the 29th minute with an impressive first-time lob over South African goalkeeper Kaylin Swart.

The hosts extended their lead soon after the restart when Hanane Ait El Haj converted a penalty following Noxolo Cesane’s foul on Ghizlane Chebbak.

South Africa reduced the deficit through Thembi Kgatlana in the 67th minute, but Morocco held firm to advance to the semi-finals and book their place at Brazil 2027.

Morocco previously made history at the 2023 Women’s World Cup by becoming the first Arab nation to reach the knockout stage of the competition.

Two additional African teams will qualify for the 2027 World Cup following the remaining WAFCON quarter-finals, with Cameroon facing Nigeria and Malawi taking on Ghana on Sunday.

The winners of both matches will automatically earn World Cup qualification.

Côte d’Ivoire and South Africa, meanwhile, still have a route to the tournament through the FIFA Play-Off Tournament.

The two defeated quarter-finalists will face each other in a play-off on August 13, with the winner advancing to the World Cup alongside one of the other two losing quarter-finalists.

The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Brazil.
