2027: Make insecurity key campaign issue, not religion – Digital Imam tells Nigerians

Sheikh Nuruddeen Khalid, popularly known as the “Digital Imam,” has called on Nigerians to make insecurity a major issue in the 2027 general elections rather than allowing religion to dominate political campaigns.
Khalid made the call in a video while reacting to the reported abduction of more than 60 worshippers during Friday prayers in Dekara, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
He expressed concern over the continued killings and abductions across the country, asking how many more lives would be lost before Nigerians and their leaders took decisive action.
“How many lives are going to be lost before we all end it?” he asked.
The cleric also criticised what he described as selective outrage whenever killings occur, saying public reactions often depend on the religious identity of the victims.
“The only time you hear noises is when a Muslim is killed in the South, or a Christian in the North. Now we are all silent because it is us killing each other,” he said.
Khalid said Nigerians should use the democratic process to demand better security by making the issue a major campaign point ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We have only one way to end this. Since it is democracy, we should make it our campaign point for 2027,” he said.
According to him, voters should focus on candidates’ ability to protect lives and property instead of whether they are Muslims or Christians or belong to a particular political camp.
He said the 2027 elections should be about identifying leaders who have credible plans to tackle the country’s worsening insecurity.
“Anyone who cannot stop the killings should step away. We won’t vote for him,” Khalid said.
He added that the issue should not be reduced to religious considerations, stressing that Nigerians should demand accountability from whoever seeks political office in 2027.
“It doesn’t matter whether he was born in the Holy Land or is on a Muslim-Muslim ticket; anyone who cannot end insecurity, we won’t vote for,” he said.
