The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Programme offers people around the world an opportunity to contribute their skills and experience to United Nations programmes supporting peace, development, humanitarian action and other global priorities.

For 2026, UNV has introduced updated Conditions of Service, including an age-inclusive range of 18 to 80 years and new volunteer categories. Depending on the assignment, opportunities may be national, international, onsite, part-time, short-term or online.

If you are interested in becoming a UN Volunteer, the application process starts online through the UNV Unified Volunteering Platform (UVP).

Here are the 10 steps to follow.

1. Check the Eligibility Requirements

The first step is to determine whether you meet the requirements for the type of UN Volunteer assignment you want.
Under the Conditions of Service effective from 1 April 2026, UNV uses an age range of 18 to 80 years.

However, individual assignments can have additional requirements relating to education, professional experience, language proficiency, nationality, residency and other qualifications.

The current categories include:
UN Community Volunteer – no professional experience required

UN Volunteer Associate – at least one month of experience

UN Volunteer Specialist – at least three years of experience

UN Volunteer Expert – at least seven years of experience

The requirements can differ depending on the assignment, so applicants should always read the specific Description of Assignment before applying.

2. Decide What Type of Volunteering You Want

UNV provides different ways to volunteer.

You can apply for national assignments in your country, international assignments abroad or eligible online volunteering opportunities.

National assignments can involve working within your own country, while international assignments allow volunteers to serve in another country.

Online volunteering allows people to contribute remotely from virtually anywhere.

For online volunteering, applicants must be at least 18.

There is no single educational or professional background required because each assignment sets its own requirements.

3. Create an Account on the UNV Platform

The next step is to create an account on the UNV Unified Volunteering Platform.

UNV says candidates must register in its Global Talent Pool before they can apply for advertised assignments.

The platform serves as the main entry point for registration, applications and the volunteer recruitment process.

During registration, you will provide basic information and verify your email address.

4. Complete Your UNV Profile

After creating your account, you must complete your candidate profile.

This is one of the most important parts of the application because UNV uses the information in your profile when matching candidates with assignments.

Your profile should contain accurate and detailed information about your:
Education
Professional experience
Skills and competencies
Languages

Volunteer experience
Relevant qualifications
Other information requested by the platform

UNV advises candidates to provide comprehensive information, particularly when describing previous professional responsibilities and achievements.

5. Make Your Profile Strong and Accurate

Do not treat your UNV profile like a formality.

Your profile is an important source of information used when candidates are considered for assignments.

Make sure your professional history clearly explains what you actually did in previous roles rather than simply listing job titles.

For example, instead of writing only “Communications Officer”, explain the communications work you performed, the responsibilities you handled and the skills you developed.

UNV says candidates can copy information from an electronic CV when completing their profile, but the CV itself cannot simply be uploaded or submitted by email in place of the profile.

6. Search for Available Volunteer Assignments

Once your profile is complete, search the assignments advertised on the UNV platform.

Read each Description of Assignment (DoA) carefully. It contains important information about the role, responsibilities, location, duration and qualifications required.

UNV notes that assignments can have very different requirements, so applicants should not assume that meeting the general UNV criteria automatically makes them eligible for every position.

Look for assignments that closely match your education, experience, professional skills and interests.

7. Apply for Assignments That Match Your Profile

After finding a suitable opportunity, follow the application instructions on the platform.

Applicants will generally need to complete a short application for an assignment in addition to having a completed UNV profile.

UNV recommends tailoring each application to the specific assignment rather than simply submitting exactly the same application every time.

Pay attention to the closing date and ensure the application is submitted before the deadline.

8. Prepare for Possible Assessment or Interview

If you are shortlisted, you may proceed to the next stage of the selection process.

Prepare by studying the assignment description and researching the UN entity or organisation involved.
Be ready to discuss:
Your professional experience
Your relevant skills
Your motivation for volunteering
Your understanding of the assignment
How you can contribute to the organisation
Examples of previous work that demonstrate your abilities
Keep your answers clear and specific, particularly when discussing previous experience.

9. Understand the Allowances and Conditions

Being a UN Volunteer is different from being a conventional salaried employee.

Eligible onsite UN Volunteers may receive allowances designed to support them during their assignment.

For example, national UN Volunteers receive a Volunteer Living Allowance, with the amount adjusted according to the volunteer category and location.

International UN Volunteers are also entitled to applicable allowances under the Conditions of Service.

UNV stresses that these allowances are intended to support volunteers during their assignments and should not be regarded as a salary or reward for volunteer work.

Online volunteering is different: online volunteers do not receive a Volunteer Living Allowance or other financial compensation.

Applicants should therefore read the conditions attached to the specific assignment before accepting an offer.

10. Avoid Scams and Never Pay for a UNV Application

Applicants should be extremely careful about websites, social media accounts or individuals claiming to guarantee a UN Volunteer position in exchange for money.

Use the official UNV platform and follow the instructions provided for the particular assignment.

The application process is carried out through UNV’s official volunteering platform, where candidates create their profiles and apply for advertised opportunities.

Also remember that completing a profile does not guarantee selection.

UNV assignments have specific requirements and candidates are selected according to the needs and criteria of the particular assignment.

What You Need Before Starting

To make the process easier, have your important information ready before creating your profile.

This may include:

Your educational history

Employment history

Professional skills

Language abilities

Volunteer experience

Relevant training and qualifications

Details of previous responsibilities and achievements

The more accurately you describe your relevant experience,

the easier it is for your profile to demonstrate your suitability for appropriate assignments.

How Long Does

Registration Take?
UNV’s registration guidance says creating a full profile can take about 45 minutes, although the actual time will depend on how much information you need to enter and how prepared you are.

Do not rush the process.

Take time to make sure your information is complete and accurate.

UNV also advises candidates to access their profile at least once a year to keep it active.

Final Advice

The biggest mistake applicants can make is applying without first reading the full assignment description.

UNV opportunities are not one-size-fits-all.

Requirements vary from one assignment to another, so carefully compare your qualifications and experience with what each organisation is looking for.

A complete, accurate and well-presented profile can help ensure that your skills are visible when suitable opportunities arise.

If you meet the requirements, create your profile, search for suitable assignments and apply through the official UNV platform.
