“Carter Efe is an established Olodo” – Solomon Buchi blasts comedian over Remi Tinubu-inspired akara skit
Relationship coach and social commentator Solomon Buchi has sparked reactions online after criticising comedian Carter Efe and lamenting what he described as Nigerians’ habit of turning serious national issues into comedy.
The criticism comes days after First Lady Oluremi Tinubu encouraged Nigerians to embrace small-scale businesses such as akara, kuli-kuli and groundnuts.
Carter Efe later shared a comedy skit inspired by her remarks, a move Buchi cited as an example of making light of issues that should provoke public concern.
“Carter Efe is an established olodo. I don’t think Nigeria will change anytime soon because the people who are meant to mobilize and galvanize young people to protest and hold their government accountable are on Instagram making comedic skits from sad realities,” she said.
He argued that many young Nigerians now turn painful national issues into comedy instead of demanding accountability from leaders, adding that even tragic events quickly become material for content creators.
Buchi further questioned whether Nigerians have become too comfortable laughing through hardship instead of confronting it.
“Maybe we laugh a lot because we are cowards. Maybe it’s our way of distracting ourselves from the elephant in the room. Whatever the government throws at us, we find something to laugh about. We need to do better,” he added.
His remarks have generated mixed reactions online. While some agreed with his criticism and called for greater civic engagement, others defended comedians, arguing that humour has become a coping mechanism for many Nigerians facing economic hardship.
The comments have reignited conversations about activism, leadership accountability and the role of content creators in shaping public discourse.
