Blackout As Lagos Flood Disrupts Power Supply
Some parts of Lagos State have been thrown into darkness following flooding that affected key transmission facilities in the state.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria announced on Wednesday that it had declared force majeure on the Oworonshoki 132/33KV and Lekki 330/132KV transmission substations as a result of flooding caused by continuous rainfall in Lagos.
NEWSNGR reports that the company disclosed this in a statement issued by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah.
TCN said the Oworonshoki 132/33KV Transmission Substation had been completely taken out of service after floodwater affected two power transformers.
The statement read, “Although Lekki 330/132KV Transmission Substation is in service as water is continuously being pumped out of the station, Oworoshoki 133/33KV Transmission Substation on the other hand is currently not in service as the level of water has affected two power transformers TR1-60 MVA and TR3-30 MVA, that tripped on no load even after attempted restoration.
“Presently, all power protection and control cable of the two power transformers are submerged inside water and efforts to evacuate the water has proved ineffective as the rain continues to fall.”
The company said efforts were ongoing to remove the floodwater and restore supply to affected areas.
“Our engineers are working, doing everything possible to evacuate the flood to enable them to test the transformers for restoration,” the statement added.
TCN apologised to affected electricity consumers, especially customers of Eko Electricity Distribution Company, taking supply from the affected substations.
“TCN regrets every inconvenience this might cause Eko Disco’s customers taking supply from the substations,” the company said.
NEWSNGR reports that the development comes amid widespread flooding in Lagos following prolonged rainfall, which has submerged major roads, disrupted traffic and affected homes and businesses in several parts of the state.
