Ashleigh Plumptre Disappointed To Miss 2026 WAFCON, Backs Super Falcons
Ashleigh Plumptre has admitted she is disappointed to miss the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after being omitted from Nigeria’s squad for the tournament in Morocco.
Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu named a 25-player squad on Friday, with the versatile defender among the high-profile absentees. Plumptre has been out of action since March after suffering a foot injury while playing for Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad Ladies.
Despite the setback, the 28-year-old threw her support behind her teammates and urged Nigerians to get behind the team as they chase another continental title.
“The body is asking for more time and I’m listening ❤️🩹 Sad to be missing this WAFCON yet hopeful in the prospect of getting to fight alongside these women again with the support of Nigerians everywhere when the body is ready to compete again,” Plumptre wrote on 𝕏.
“So, in the meantime, back these women, back them on their quest for victory once more. Go easy on them, they need you 💚
I am with you ladies 🫶🏽
Naija no dey carry last 🫀.”
NEWSNGR reports that Plumptre featured prominently at the 2022 WAFCON in Morocco, where she cemented her place as one of Nigeria’s first-choice defenders. She also played an important role in the Super Falcons’ triumphant 2024 campaign as the team claimed a record-extending 10th African title.
