World Cup 2026: ‘He’s not fit’ – Martinez confirms Portugal player to miss DR Congo clash
Portugal head coach, Roberto Martinez, has confirmed that defender Ruben Dias is not fit to play for their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against DR Congo on Wednesday evening.
Dias sustained an injury in the final days leading up to Portugal’s clash with DR Congo.
The Manchester City star had featured in Portugal’s final two pre-World Cup warm-up fixtures against Chile and Nigeria, respectively.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Martinez said of Dias, “He is not at 100 percent, and it is important not to take risks.
“He is not fit for the game. He is working well, but it is important to think about the period when Ruben will be at 100 percent.”
