Tinubu Extends Tenure Of Customs Boss By 6 Months
President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.
The extension, announced on Friday, comes as Adeniyi’s previous tenure was due to expire on August 1, 2026.
According to the Presidency, the additional six months will enable the customs chief to consolidate the implementation of the national single window initiative while ensuring a smooth and orderly leadership transition within the service.
During the transition period, Adeniyi will work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of comptroller of customs and facilitate the mandatory retirement of officers who have either attained the age of 60 or completed 35 years in service.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency described the extension as the final one to allow the Customs boss complete key reforms before handing over.

Over the years, he rose steadily through the ranks, becoming deputy comptroller in 2012, comptroller in 2017, assistant comptroller-general in 2020, acting deputy comptroller-general in January 2023, before his appointment as comptroller-general by President Tinubu in June 2023.
The Presidency expressed confidence that the extension would help strengthen ongoing reforms within the customs and ensure continuity in its modernization agenda.
