Kaduna Community Protests as ‘Repentant’ Bandits Launch Fresh Attack
Tension gripped Birnin Gwari town in Kaduna State on Friday after residents staged a protest over fresh attacks linked to suspected “repentant” bandits operating in the area.
The protest followed the killing of a commercial driver and the abduction of several residents in separate incidents, further worsening fears over the rising insecurity in the Birnin Gwari axis.
Angry youths and community members reportedly flooded parts of the town to express frustration over what they described as the failure of security measures to stop recurring attacks, despite repeated assurances of improved safety in the area.
The unrest was triggered by the killing of Mallam Ibrahim Adamu, a commercial driver who was reportedly attacked along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari highway.
Adamu was said to have been shot dead by armed men at Kwanan Giginya while transporting passengers on the route. He reportedly died at the scene after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle.
Sources said the attackers abducted about five passengers after carrying out the attack before fleeing to an unknown destination.
The deceased was also reported to be a grandson of a traditional ruler in the Birnin Gwari Emirate, a development that further deepened tension within the community.
Residents, especially youths, took to the streets shortly after news of the killing spread across the town.
The protesters accused suspected “repentant” bandits of continuing to terrorise communities despite ongoing reconciliation efforts and peace arrangements with some armed groups.
During the protest, tension reportedly escalated as some angry demonstrators moved against herders and Fulani residents in parts of Birnin Gwari.
The situation raised concerns over possible reprisals and a wider breakdown of peace in the area.
Some herders and Fulani travellers were said to have fled the town over fears of being attacked.
Security operatives were later deployed to restore calm. Traditional rulers and community leaders also stepped in to prevent the situation from escalating further.
Normalcy was eventually restored, although tension remains high.
In another incident that added to growing concerns, four farmers were reportedly kidnapped in the Kurgi area of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.
The victims were said to be working on their farms when gunmen stormed the area and abducted them.
Their whereabouts remain unknown as of the time of filing this report.
The latest attacks have once again highlighted the worsening security situation along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari corridor, an area that has remained notorious for bandit attacks, kidnappings and violent assaults.
Residents say insecurity has continued to disrupt daily life, affecting transportation, farming and commercial activities across several communities.
Many locals also alleged that armed groups regularly attack travellers and villagers, carting away motorcycles, phones, cash and other valuables.
Community leaders have now called on security agencies to intensify surveillance and strengthen patrol operations along the highway and vulnerable farming communities.
They warned that continued attacks could further cripple economic activities and deepen fear among residents already struggling with repeated security threats.
