JUST IN: FG Secures Release of Six Nigerians Detained in Côte d’Ivoire
The Federal Government has secured the release of six Nigerians who were detained in the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire over allegations linked to economic crimes.
The Nigerians had reportedly been in detention since October 2025 before diplomatic efforts by Nigerian authorities led to their eventual release.
The development was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement issued on Friday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.
According to the ministry, the release followed months of sustained diplomatic engagement between Nigerian officials and authorities in Côte d’Ivoire.
It was disclosed that four of the detained Nigerians were released on June 22, while the remaining two regained freedom a day later on June 23.
The ministry said the successful resolution of the matter was largely due to consistent intervention by the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan.
The embassy, under the leadership of Ambassador Nwabiola C. Ezenwa, was said to have maintained regular contact with relevant institutions in Côte d’Ivoire throughout the detention period.
Officials also ensured steady consular access to the affected Nigerians while closely monitoring their welfare and treatment.
In addition, the embassy reportedly engaged extensively with key institutions in the host country, including the Ivorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Justice, as part of efforts to secure the detainees’ release.
The Federal Government commended Ambassador Ezenwa and embassy officials for their commitment and persistence in handling the matter.
It also appreciated the government of Côte d’Ivoire for its cooperation during the diplomatic process.
The ministry noted that the strong bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire played a major role in resolving the issue peacefully.
Reaffirming its commitment to Nigerians living outside the country, the ministry said protecting citizens abroad remains a major priority of the Federal Government.
It stated that, “The Federal Government of Nigeria remains firmly committed to the protection of the rights, welfare and dignity of Nigerian citizens abroad.”
The ministry further stressed that diplomatic missions across the world would continue to support Nigerians through consular assistance and strategic engagements with host countries.
According to the statement, “Through its diplomatic missions worldwide, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to provide consular assistance and engage host governments through established diplomatic channels to safeguard the interests of Nigerians wherever they may reside.”
The government also reassured Nigerians in the diaspora that their welfare remains central to Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.
It added, “The Ministry wishes to reassure Nigerian nationals overseas that the welfare and protection of citizens remain a cardinal priority of Nigeria’s foreign policy,”
The ministry also urged Nigerians travelling, working or residing abroad to obey the laws of their host countries and maintain regular contact with the nearest Nigerian embassy or consulate for support when necessary.
