I Told Them They Won’t Win Any Ward – Ekiti Gov Boasts After Securing Re-election
Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has boasted that he told opposition parties they would not win a single ward in the state, following his victory in Saturday’s governorship election.
However, the governor was corrected that the opposition actually won one.
The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Oyebanji, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, the winner of the election in the early hours of Sunday.
The Returning Officer and Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Professor Adenike Oladiji, announced the final results at the commission’s headquarters in Ado-Ekiti, confirming that Oyebanji met all legal requirements for re-election.
Oyebanji secured his second term by gathering 319,224 votes across the 16 local government areas of the state. His closest challenger, Olumayokun Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party, secured 40,533 votes, while Dare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress received 12,872 votes.
Official records show that out of 988,251 registered voters, 384,940 were accredited for the exercise, resulting in 375,777 valid votes from a total of 382,109 votes cast.
The breakdown of the results shows that the opposition candidates struggled even within their local strongholds.
The Peoples Democratic Party candidate, who comes from Efon-Alaaye in Efon Local Government Area, lost his own local government to the ruling party, where the All Progressives Congress polled 8,742 votes against his party’s 2,051 votes.
