DR Congo Hold Portugal To Shock World Cup Draw

Democratic Republic of Congo marked their return to the FIFA World Cup after 52 years with a spirited 1-1 draw against Portugal, frustrating the UEFA Nations League holders in their Group K opener.

The result extended Portugal’s poor record in World Cup opening matches, with just one win from their last five tournament curtain-raisers.

Portugal made the perfect start and took the lead inside six minutes when João Neves rose to meet Pedro Neto’s cross and nodded home. The midfielder’s rich vein of form continued as he netted his fourth goal in two competitive internationals.

DR Congo responded positively, with Yoane Wissa firing narrowly wide before Cédric Bakambu saw an effort blocked as the African side searched for a quick reply.

Despite boasting a midfield packed with creativity, Portugal struggled to carve out clear opportunities. Bruno Fernandes produced a superb pass to release Nuno Mendes, but goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi reacted sharply to deny him. DR Congo remained disciplined at the back and gradually grew into the contest.

Their persistence paid off just before half-time. Wissa found himself completely unmarked from a corner and powered a header beyond Diogo Costa to score DR Congo’s first-ever World Cup goal. Although the Leopards enjoyed only a small share of possession in the opening half, the equaliser reflected their growing confidence and organisation.

Portugal attempted to raise the tempo after the break, introducing Francisco Conceição, who quickly became involved in attacking moves. João Cancelo thought he had restored the lead with an acrobatic finish, only for the offside flag to cut short the celebrations.

At the other end, Bakambu struck the post during a threatening attack, though play was eventually halted for a foul in the build-up.

Cristiano Ronaldo was later presented with his best chance of the match but failed to direct Conceição’s delivery into the net. Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages, yet neither could find the decisive breakthrough as the contest finished level.

The draw represents a significant step forward for DR Congo, who endured a miserable World Cup campaign in their previous appearance, losing all three matches without scoring. With Uzbekistan and Colombia also in Group K, the Leopards have given themselves genuine hope of reaching the knockout rounds.
