CGC Volleyball Premier League: COAS Spikers Defeat CNS Spikers on Thrilling Day 6

The sixth day of the 3rd Chief of the Naval Staff (CGC) Volleyball Premier League (First Phase) delivered another exciting round of matches in Abuja, with COAS Spikers exacting revenge on rivals CNS Spikers in the women’s category, while top teams across both divisions strengthened their campaigns with impressive victories.

Played at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium on Saturday, the day’s fixtures produced dominant straight-set victories, hard-fought four-set encounters and one dramatic five-set thriller, highlighting the growing competitiveness of Nigeria’s premier volleyball competition.

The headline clash in the women’s category saw COAS Spikers bounce back from an earlier defeat to CNS Spikers, claiming a deserved 3-1 victory in an entertaining contest.

COAS took the opening set 25-22 before CNS responded with an 18-25 win in the second. The Army side, however, regained momentum to claim the third and fourth sets 25-18 and 25-21 respectively, sealing a statement victory.

Speaking after the match, COAS Spikers Head Coach Elishama Elam credited the victory to resilience, tactical discipline and his players’ refusal to surrender despite facing difficult moments during the contest.

“First and foremost, I have to give all the glory to God Almighty. It was a very tense game because we know ourselves very well, and we approached the match exactly as we planned.

“If you looked at the game, they were leading by seven points at a stage, but we kept telling the girls that the match wasn’t over until a team reached 25 points. They showed great resilience, and you saw how the match eventually turned out.”

The coach dismissed suggestions that the victory was a surprise, insisting his side has gradually established superiority over their rivals.

“Don’t get it wrong. We started beating them during the Super Cup and we’ve maintained that edge. But we never underestimated them. We simply told the girls to give their very best and fight for every point, and today they delivered.”

Elsewhere in the women’s competition, Nigeria Customs Service continued their impressive run with a commanding straight-set victory over Fire Service, winning 25-12, 25-16 and 25-13.

Anambra Queens also secured a convincing 3-0 triumph over Life Camp Volleyball Club, taking the sets 25-21, 25-19 and 25-23.

Olalomi Royal Angels defeated Excelsior VC in straight sets (25-22, 25-13, 25-23), while Benue Queens came from one set down to beat Kada Emeralds 3-1 after losing the opening set 20-25 before dominating the remaining sets 25-14, 25-18 and 25-10.

One of the day’s most entertaining encounters saw NSCDC edge VIP & Partners 3-2 in the only five-set match of the day. After sharing the opening four sets, NSCDC produced a dominant performance in the deciding set to win 15-6.

In the men’s category, CNS Spikers opened their campaign on Day Six with a solid 3-1 victory over Kano Pillars, taking the match 25-18, 22-25, 25-18 and 25-20.

NSCDC recorded a comprehensive 3-0 victory against Sunshine Spikers, winning 25-19, 25-21 and 25-17.

UCEM Volleyball Club also secured a straight-set victory over Offa Volleyball Club, triumphing 25-22, 25-16 and 25-19.

COAS Spikers were equally impressive, brushing aside Lifecamp Volleyball Club 3-0. Although Lifecamp fought gallantly in the second set, eventually losing 30-32, COAS comfortably claimed the other two sets 25-17 and 25-14.

The Nigeria Correctional Service battled from a set down to defeat the Nigeria Police Force 3-1 in one of the day’s most competitive fixtures. After dropping the opening set 23-25, the Correctional Service side rallied to win the remaining sets 29-27, 25-21 and 25-23.
