CAN DEMANDS URGENT PROBE INTO VIRAL VIDEO THREATENING CHRISTIANS IN ENUGU, JOS

Archbishop Daniel Okoh Calls for Arrest of Perpetrators, Urges Security Agencies to Protect Worshippers
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on security agencies to launch an urgent investigation into a viral video allegedly showing youths chanting threats to attack Christians in Enugu and Jos during Sunday worship.
In a statement, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, described the reported threats as alarming and unacceptable, insisting that Nigerians must be free to practise their faith without fear of violence or intimidation.
The association urged the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to establish when and where the video was recorded, identify those involved and determine whether any individuals or groups organised or facilitated the activity.
CAN maintained that anyone found responsible should be held accountable under the law.
Archbishop Okoh expressed particular concern over the apparent involvement of children and young people in the chants, warning that exposing minors to messages promoting religious hatred could have serious consequences.
He stressed that the threats should not be dismissed as harmless youthful behaviour, but treated with the urgency required to protect lives and prevent possible violence.
CAN SEEKS PROTECTION FOR WORSHIPPERS
The association also called on authorities to assess any credible security threats arising from the video and strengthen protection for Christian communities and places of worship in Enugu, Jos and other affected areas.
CAN noted reports that the leadership of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS) had disassociated itself from the video. However, it said an independent investigation remained necessary to establish the facts and determine whether any organisation or individual was involved.
The association further urged religious leaders across the country to reject messages and activities that encourage hatred or violence against people of other faiths.
According to CAN, Nigeria must not allow threats based on religious differences to go unchallenged, warning that failure to address such incidents could undermine peaceful coexistence and public confidence in security institutions.
CAN URGES CHRISTIANS TO REMAIN CALM
While demanding swift action from the government, CAN appealed to Christians to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding as investigations proceed.
It warned against retaliatory actions that could endanger innocent people or deepen religious divisions.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to religious freedom, justice and peaceful coexistence, stressing that every Nigerian deserves equal protection under the law, regardless of religious affiliation.
CAN called on the government to investigate the matter thoroughly, ensure accountability and safeguard the constitutional right of citizens to worship without fear.
