Bandits have killed a prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka, and his friend, Adamu Abubakar, in an attack outside the cleric’s residence in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu.

According to the police, the attack occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Monday, October 26, 2026, when two armed men riding on a motorcycle reportedly opened fire on the victims.

The police spokesperson explained that both men sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and were immediately rushed to the nearest hospital for medical attention.

However, a doctor at the hospital later confirmed them dead.

Sadiq-Aliyu added that the Divisional Police Officer in Dutsin-Ma promptly mobilised a team of police operatives to the scene after receiving information about the incident.

He said the command had commenced an investigation into the killings and was making efforts to track down those responsible for the attack.

“Investigations have commenced and efforts are being intensified to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” the police spokesperson stated.

The police, however, did not disclose the motive behind the attack or provide details about the identities of the suspected gunmen.

The killing has added to security concerns in Katsina State, where residents have continued to face threats from armed groups operating in parts of the state.

Authorities are expected to continue investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
