A Nigerian Christian Borderland Burns Again as Washington Watches

Seven Dead on Mambilla Plateau, 340 homes razed as hundreds flee into Cameroon

(Taraba) – Flames that razed over 340 homes on Nigeria’s Christian-majority Mambilla Plateau have again exposed a borderland where killings go unpunished and survivors flee to Cameroon.

At least seven people were killed, 186 livestock slaughtered and more than 1,000 residents displaced in violence that erupted in mid-September around Mbamnga, Mbara and Geroji in Sardauna County, Taraba State, Daily Trust reported.

Residents earlier told TruthNigeria they counted nine dead. Dozens remain missing.

Hundreds, chiefly women and children, crossed into Nyang in Cameroon’s Donga-Mantung Division, where they remain in makeshift shelters.

The Mambilla have farmed the plateau for centuries, and more than 70 percent of them are Christian by church and community counts. Muslim Fulani pastoralists arrived later for grazing.

Dueling Accounts

Officials trace the violence to a farm quarrel between a Mambilla woman and a Fulani man. Mambilla residents tell a different story.

“Their cattle destroyed large portions of our farmlands. When we attempted to drive the cattle away, they confronted us with guns and machetes,” Reuben Bahago of Mbamnga told TruthNigeria.

He alleged that heavily armed Fulani Ethnic Militia (FEM) fighters stormed all three villages that night, torching houses and hacking residents in a land grab.

Nigerian dailies reported the reverse. Daily Trust named eight Fulani hamlets in Geroji as the worst hit, including Wuro Buba and Wuro Ardo Bashiru.

“We have lost everything. Our houses were burnt,” said Ardo Bashiru, a Fulani community leader.

TruthNigeria could not independently confirm either version. Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association did not respond to requests for comment. Former ambassador Hassan Jika Ardo praised Mambilla residents of Mbar who shielded Fulani neighbors from assailants.

Christian Frontier Under Pressure

“Just like in Takum, Wukari, Benue, Southern Kaduna and Plateau, it is the Fulani militia versus the indigenes, who are overwhelmingly Christians,” said Adam Adakole of Adakson Security Consultancy in Takum.

The plateau’s record cuts both ways. In June 2017, Mambilla armed men swept Fulani settlements across Sardauna. Amnesty International confirmed 141 dead, while Miyetti Allah claimed 351. Adakole said FEM incursions that year triggered the reprisals. No one was prosecuted after 2017 or the 2018 flare-up.

“No one has been arrested. No one has been prosecuted,” Mambilla social commentator Jamilu Muhammad told Daily Trust. He cited a 2024 ECOWAS Court judgment on the 2017 violence that ordered victims resettled and compensated, and which remains unimplemented.

“Whenever these conflicts happen, there will be a lot of statements and eventually temporary solutions are found,” said former diplomat Ilyasu Gadu. He blamed local, state and federal governments for never tackling the land and grazing disputes.

“All perpetrators of this dastardly act, no matter how highly placed, must be fished out, arrested and prosecuted,” Governor Agbu Kefas said in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Timothy Kataps.

Taraba Police Commissioner Edwin Ogbeghagha and the Army brigade commander toured the area. Police said a helicopter from the Nigeria Police Air Wing would boost aerial surveillance. The state indefinitely postponed Taraba Tourism Day, which had been scheduled for Gembu, a town on the Mambilla Plateau. The State Emergency Management Agency said it had dispatched food, medicine and temporary shelter.

Residents are unconvinced. Earlier this month, Mbamnga residents faulted the Army’s quick-response unit in Gembu for failing to stop days of killing.

Washington’s Red Line

The plateau burns under a spotlight Abuja did not want.

“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter,” President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on Oct. 31, 2025, designating Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern.

“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the USA will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria,” Trump wrote a day later.

Reps. Riley Moore and Chris Smith introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026. It would require annual U.S. reporting on prosecutions, the very thing missing on the Mambilla.

Equipping the Persecuted (ETP), the U.S. charity that operates TruthNigeria, had documented 4,216 Christians killed in Nigeria this year by early September. That is about 76 percent of Christian deaths worldwide.

“We have got to quit calling it the farmer-herder clash,” ETP founder Judd Saul told a Hudson Institute briefing in Washington on Aug. 28. “The herders have AK-47s and they are Muslims.”

“We are going to see another Rwanda genocide,” Saul warned at the same briefing.

“Someone needs to let Trump know who is responsible for killing the Christians in Nigeria,” Saul told the Daily Caller in July.

Waiting in Cameroon

For now, the displaced wait across the border for security and rebuilding. Gadu warned that the approaching 2027 election season could tempt politicians to exploit the crisis.

“Anger and rumor must not destroy the decades of brotherhood we have built,” Kataps said.

On the Mambilla, both communities can point to graves. Neither has seen a courtroom.
