2027: Police assure Nigerians of adequate security during general elections

The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring adequate security for Nigerians to exercise their voting rights freely and peacefully during the 2027 general elections.
The Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, gave the assurance while flagging off a five-day training programme on election security management for police officers at the Manpower Development Institute, Dutse.
He said the training was aimed at equipping officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to discharge their responsibilities professionally and effectively during the elections.
According to him, security remains a critical foundation for credible, free and fair elections, stressing the need for police personnel to ensure the safety of voters, electoral officials and other stakeholders throughout the electoral process.
The commissioner urged participating officers to demonstrate professionalism, neutrality and respect for human rights while carrying out their election duties.
He said the training, organised by the Jigawa State Police Command in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, is part of a nationwide programme themed “Role of Police Officers in Strengthening Electoral Security.”
Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, represented by Ibrahim Muhammad, said the initiative demonstrated the Fund’s commitment to strengthening the operational capacity and preparedness of police personnel ahead of the elections.
Also speaking, the Managing Consultant, Umar Danladi Muhammad, said the training would equip officers with the knowledge required to maintain neutrality, professionalism and accountability throughout the electoral process.
He explained that the programme would focus on election security management, conflict prevention, protection of fundamental human rights and the lawful handling of election-related incidents.
The programme was officially launched by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on October 22, 2026.
