Uganda Orders Police To Wear Name Tags, Badge Numbers On Uniforms

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has announced that all police officers must visibly display their names, badges and identification numbers on their uniforms, while citizens have the right to demand such details from arresting officers.
Kainerugaba announced the directive in a terse statement posted on his X handle, saying the new requirement would take effect immediately and remain in force.
“From today and forever more ALL Ugandan Police Officers will wear their name tags on their right chest pocket,” he said.
He added that officers must also display their police badge and identification number on the opposite side of their uniforms.

“They must also wear their police badge and number on their left chest pocket,” Kainerugaba said.
The UPDF chief further said Ugandan citizens have the right to request the identity of police officers carrying out arrests.
“Finally, all Ugandan citizens have the right to demand the name and badge number of any arresting officer,” he said.
Kainerugaba also stated that citizens could resist an arrest if an officer failed to provide the requested identification.
“If they do not respond, you have the right to resist arrest,” he said.
