Tinubu and the Case for Continuity: Why 2027 Matters

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 presidential election, a support group backing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election has called for a national debate centred on continuity, economic reforms and the long-term development of the country.

The BTO FOR PBAT ’27 Support Group, led by its Director-General, Ogbeni Adojutelegan Adesuyi Gideon, said the 2027 election should be assessed not only on immediate economic conditions but also on the government’s willingness to undertake difficult reforms and build institutions capable of delivering sustainable growth.

According to the group, President Tinubu assumed office at a challenging period in Nigeria’s economic and institutional development but chose to pursue reforms aimed at restructuring the economy, strengthening public institutions, attracting investment and laying the foundation for long-term growth.

The group acknowledged that the impact of major economic reforms could be difficult for citizens in the short term, stressing that Nigerians were justified in demanding measurable improvements in their living conditions.

It, however, argued that the administration’s performance should also be judged by the direction of its policies, its response to challenges and its ability to translate reforms into sustainable prosperity.

The group pointed to fiscal and economic restructuring, infrastructure development, digital transformation and institutional reforms as areas where it said the Tinubu administration had sought to alter the way government operates.

It also cited developments within the Ministry of Interior under the leadership of Hon. (Dr.) Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, particularly improvements in passport administration and the deployment of technology, as examples of reforms it believes can improve public-service delivery.

“2027 must be more than another contest for political power,” the group said, describing the election as an opportunity for Nigerians to consider the issues of continuity, consolidation and results.

It maintained that Nigeria’s ambition to become a globally competitive country would require sustained investment, stronger institutions, economic opportunities, improved security and infrastructure, as well as leadership willing to take difficult decisions while remaining accountable to citizens.

The support group said its endorsement of Tinubu for another term was based on its desire to see the administration consolidate its ongoing reforms and ensure that their benefits increasingly reach ordinary Nigerians.

In Ondo State, the group said it had commenced grassroots mobilisation in support of the President ahead of the 2027 election.

According to the organisation, its mobilisation strategy will extend across local governments, communities, wards and polling units, with the objective of securing 90 per cent support for President Tinubu in Ondo State.

The group said it would pursue the target through peaceful democratic mobilisation, public engagement and persuasion, including presenting the administration’s record while listening to the concerns and expectations of voters.

It stressed, however, that the final decision rests with the Nigerian electorate.

The group expressed confidence that Tinubu should be given the opportunity to seek a renewed democratic mandate and consolidate the policies and reforms initiated by his administration.

It also argued that Nigeria’s 2027 election would attract international attention because of the country’s importance to Africa and the wider global community.

“2027 is about more than another four years,” the group said. “It is about whether Nigeria will consolidate reform, strengthen its institutions and continue building toward the nation its people deserve.”
