Tammy Abraham scored twice as Aston Villa defeated Coventry City 3-1 to book their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Abraham, one of seven changes to the Villa side that lost to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, opened the scoring after seven minutes, finishing calmly to give Unai Emery’s side an early advantage.
The striker’s performance came after Emery had been willing to let him leave during the summer transfer window. Abraham rejected loan moves to Ipswich Town and Everton to remain at Villa and fight for his place following the arrival of Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea.
Coventry responded through Victor Torp, who produced a superb free-kick from 25 yards to level the score and register the Sky Blues’ first home goal of the season.
The hosts threatened to complete the turnaround, with Gustavo Hamer going close with a long-range effort, but Villa regained control before half-time.
Ross Barkley restored Villa’s lead when he was left unmarked to glance a corner into the net, exposing Coventry’s defensive problems.
Abraham then completed his brace shortly before the hour mark, shrugging off debutant Stephen Mfuni before tapping in from John McGinn’s corner to put Villa firmly in control.

The result gives Emery’s side a much-needed boost after a difficult start to their Premier League campaign, with Villa having lost three of their opening four league matches.
For Coventry, the defeat compounds a difficult run. They have now lost five of their opening six matches in all competitions and have conceded 15 goals this season.
Villa will face Bournemouth away in the fourth round, with the ties scheduled for the week commencing October 26.
