Prioritise safety during heavy rains – Ekiti Commissioner warns residents

Ekiti State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, has called on residents to be safety-conscious as heavy rains continue across the state.

Following a recent heavy downpour in parts of the state, the Commissioner, advised motorists, tricycle operators and commercial motorcyclists to avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall to avoid accidents caused by flood or associated with slippery roads.

She urged those who must be on the road to reduce their speed, keep a safe distance from other vehicles and steer clear of flooded roads and waterlogged areas.

The Commissioner also appealed to residents to ensure proper environmental sanitation and ensure that their gutters and drainage channels are free of waste, cautioning against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in waterways.

Aluko-Ajisafe further warned residents to avoid contact with flowing water, stay away from drainage channels and unstable structures during downpours, and to exercise caution around trees and electrical installations.

She advised the public to promptly report cases of fallen trees, blocked drains and other environmental hazards to relevant authorities, noting that environmental safety is a collective responsibility, while proper waste disposal and adherence to environmental laws would complement the government’s efforts.

The Commissioner reassured residents that the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources will continue to monitor weather and environmental conditions across the state and collaborate with relevant agencies to protect lives, property and the environment.
