President Tinubu Orders 180 Day Roadmap For Digital Free Zones

President Bola Tinubu has directed the development of a roadmap for the full implementation of Nigeria’s Digital Free Zones initiative within 180 days.

The initiative is designed to enable Nigerian technology and service companies to access global capital and markets while keeping their businesses and intellectual property in Nigeria.

Tinubu gave the directive to the Minister of Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, who serves as Vice-Chairman and Implementation Coordinator of the Presidential Steering Committee on Digital Free Zones.

The President said the initiative would create more opportunities for Nigerians to work for global companies from within the country while expanding the ecosystem for engineers, developers, designers, lawyers, accountants and other professionals.

“Nigeria has the talent, enterprise and ambition to build companies that can compete anywhere in the world,” Tinubu said.

“Our responsibility as a government is to ensure that Nigerians do not have to leave Nigeria or rely on other jurisdictions to realise that potential.”

The initiative is already taking shape with Itana, Nigeria’s first Digital Free Zone, licensed by the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority.

The $500 million Itana Innovation project in Alaro City, Lagos, is backed by the Africa Finance Corporation and is expected to combine an innovation campus, access to capital and ecosystem services for African startups.

Tinubu said the government wants more companies to be incorporated, financed and governed from Nigeria while serving markets across Africa and beyond.

“I want a young Nigerian in Kano, Enugu, Warri, Minna, Maiduguri or Ibadan to be able to work for a global company without leaving home,” he said.

The Presidential Steering Committee will also work on regulatory, taxation, banking, immigration, arbitration and digital government processes within the free zones.

Tinubu said the initiative would help Nigeria benefit from the expansion of Africa’s digital economy and digitally enabled trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area.

The President said the government’s broader objective was to retain more economic value generated by Nigerian talent through jobs, investment, professional services, intellectual property and the growth of Nigerian-owned businesses.
