Police sergeant killed after being dragged under vehicle in Lagos

A police officer has died after being knocked down and dragged underneath a vehicle during a stop-and-search operation in Egbeda, Lagos State.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on September 26 at about 2:20pm along Olugbede Street, Egbeda, when police officers conducting the operation flagged down a Lexus ES 350 with registration number FKJ 223 KX.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing on the command’s achievements in September 2026.

Fatai said the driver, identified as 21-year-old Olumide Olusola, initially brought the vehicle to a stop but suddenly accelerated as Sergeant Johnson Okediji approached the driver’s side.

According to the commissioner, the officer was knocked down and dragged underneath the vehicle for several metres despite efforts by fellow police officers and passers-by to get the driver to stop.

The driver was eventually pursued and arrested, while the injured officer was rushed to a nearby hospital before being referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH.

However, Sergeant Okediji, who sustained multiple fractures and severe head injuries, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

His remains have been deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The Lexus ES 350 has also been recovered and taken to the police station.
