BREAKING: Rivers Assembly Backs Creation of State Police
The Rivers State House of Assembly has endorsed the proposed creation of state police in Nigeria.
The development follows the transmission of the 1999 Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, by the National Assembly to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration and approval.
If approved, the constitutional amendment would pave the way for a dual policing structure in Nigeria, comprising the Federal Police Service and State Police Services.
Rivers becomes the latest state assembly to support the proposed reform, following similar positions reportedly taken by the Houses of Assembly in Ogun and Nasarawa states.
The proposed state police system is part of ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s security architecture and address concerns over policing and internal security across the country.
