Police Intensify Illegal Firearm Proliferation Crackdown In Akwa Ibom, Arrest Cultist

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has intensified its campaign against the proliferation of illegal firearms, leading to the arrest of a suspected cult leader and the recovery of a locally made shotgun in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed the development while briefing journalists at the police headquarters in Uyo.

She said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to rid the state of small arms and light weapons ahead of political activities and electioneering.

According to her, police officers acting on credible intelligence provided by concerned residents intercepted a 23-year-old suspect, identified as Mfon Essien, on Aya Road, off Uyo Road in Ikot Ekpene, at about 12:30 p.m. on September 6, 2026.

John explained that a search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of a locally made shotgun loaded with a live cartridge, which was concealed in his clothing.

“The suspect was immediately arrested, while the firearm and ammunition were secured as exhibits,” she said, adding that he remains in police custody as investigations continue.

The police spokesperson noted that investigators are working to determine the source of the weapon, the reason it was being carried, and whether the suspect has links to other individuals or criminal networks involved in the circulation and use of illegal firearms.

Reacting to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Baba Azare, reiterated the command’s commitment to combating the unlawful possession and movement of firearms across the state.

He stated that the police would continue to deploy intelligence-driven operations, targeted patrols and other lawful crime-prevention strategies to remove illegal weapons from circulation and prevent their use in violent crimes.

Azare also called on residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies with timely and credible information on suspicious activities, illegal arms and criminal elements.

He assured that the identities of informants would be protected.

The commissioner emphasized that the command remains committed to protecting lives and property while sustaining peace and security throughout Akwa Ibom State.
