Police Disburse N2.3bn To Families Of 2,971 Fallen Officers

The Force Headquarters has released N2.3 billion in insurance and welfare benefits to 2,971 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of officers who died while serving the country.

Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, presented the cheques to beneficiaries on Thursday in Abuja, under the Nigeria Police Force Group Life Assurance, Group Personal Accident and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.

The payment covers insurance policy years from 2017/2018 through 2024/2025, representing entitlements arising from the service and sacrifices of police officers who lost their lives while serving in the force.

Disu said the financial support was part of the institution’s responsibility to the families of officers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

“Beyond the financial values of these cheques, this exercise carries an important message: the Nigeria Police Force will not abandon the families of those who paid the supreme price in service,” Disu said.

He acknowledged the difficult security environment in which police officers operate, noting that personnel continue to lose their lives while responding to security threats across the country.

According to him, although no financial compensation could replace the loved ones lost by the beneficiaries, the payments were necessary to support the families left behind.

Disu urged recipients to use the funds prudently, particularly for sustainable needs such as the education, welfare and future prospects of children and other dependants of the deceased officers.

He reaffirmed that the welfare of police personnel remains a major priority of his administration, stressing that an institution that demands courage, discipline, loyalty and sacrifice from its officers must also demonstrate commitment to their welfare and that of their families.

The latest disbursement comes about five months after another payment exercise in which the police released N2.4 billion to 1,075 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of officers who died in active service.

That earlier payment covered several outstanding insurance policy years and included recoveries from obligations that had remained unpaid for years.

The renewed payments come amid increased attention to the welfare of Nigeria’s security personnel as the country continues to confront widespread insecurity.

The federal government has also approved salary increases ranging from 30 percent to 80 percent for military personnel, with the new structure taking effect from September 1, 2026.

About 250,000 military personnel are expected to benefit from the salary adjustment, with junior personnel receiving increases of up to 80 per cent, while senior officers are expected to receive between 30 per cent and 50 per cent.

The latest police insurance payment underscores the growing importance of welfare measures, including salaries, insurance benefits and financial support for families of personnel who lose their lives in active service.
