NDC Presidential candidate Peter Obi has said he has no objection to the release of his academic records, following reports of legal action seeking Certified True Copies of his university certificates and other educational documents.

Obi, in a statement posted on X on Tuesday, said he was aware of reports concerning a request for CTCs of his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, awarded by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), in 1984, as well as records relating to his admission and studies.

“I wish to state clearly that I have absolutely no objection to the release of these records,” Obi said.

He urged the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, “within the limits permitted by law, to make available, upon legitimate request, my academic certificates, records, and other official documents relating to my admission and studies at the University.”

Obi also said he had no objection to other educational institutions he attended, within and outside Nigeria, making his academic records available in line with applicable laws and procedures.

The former Anambra State governor said he believed in transparency and accountability, particularly among those seeking public office.

“I believe strongly in transparency and accountability, particularly for those who seek the privilege of public office,” he said.

Obi, who is seeking the presidency, said he welcomed legitimate public interest in his background, qualifications and record, adding that he was prepared to undergo the level of scrutiny expected of anyone seeking the country’s highest office.

“Those who seek to lead must be willing to demonstrate, through both their words and actions, that they have nothing to conceal from the people they aspire to serve,” he said.

He, however, called for public scrutiny to be “fair, lawful, and applied consistently to everyone who seeks to lead our nation.”

Obi also challenged other presidential candidates to make their educational qualifications and relevant records available for public scrutiny.

“I encourage every presidential candidate to make their educational qualifications and relevant records available for legitimate public scrutiny,” he said.

According to him, such disclosure should be viewed as an opportunity to strengthen public confidence, promote accountability and rebuild Nigerians’ trust in political leaders.

“Leadership must reflect the values we expect from the society we hope to build,” Obi said, stressing that transparency, integrity and accountability should begin with those seeking public office.

He concluded by reaffirming his willingness to have his academic background examined, saying those seeking Nigerians’ trust must be ready to earn it through openness and accountability.

“A New Nigeria is POssible,” Obi added.

TVC News Online had earlier reported that a social media influencer @bayobilisi had made a bet of N5 Million with members of the Obidients movement to find a classmate of Peter Obi from his University days at the University of Nigeria Nsukka.

A former factional National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi, has also instituted a Freedom of Information request for the results of the former Anambra State governor, his admission letter and other documents related to his time at the institution and his class of result.
