Political economist Pat Utomi has outlined seven democracy litmus tests he says Nigerians should apply when assessing candidates ahead of the 2027 general election.
Utomi, who disclosed this in a post on X, said he would address a gathering of Nigerians in Atlanta, Georgia, who regularly pray for the peace and progress of Nigeria.
He said candidates should be judged by their commitment to democratic debate, practical governance plans, anti-corruption strategies, security, character, social services and economic development.
Utomi said voters should reject candidates who refuse to participate in debates, arguing that such candidates could be “hiding something”.
He cited political debates as an important factor in democratic decision-making, adding that debates had helped shape political outcomes in Nigeria and South Korea.
He also urged candidates to present practical plans for moving government away from elite accommodation towards advancing the common good.
According to him, presidential candidates must clearly demonstrate how they intend to tackle corruption, protect lives and property and provide effective leadership.
Utomi stressed the importance of character, urging voters to scrutinise candidates and reject those who resort to hate speech, divisive rhetoric or violence.
He further called on voters to consider candidates with clear plans for improving education and healthcare.
The economist said candidates must also present fresh ideas for accelerating Nigeria’s transition from consumption to production and reducing poverty.
Utomi said these tests should form part of the criteria Nigerians use to determine who deserves their votes in 2027
