Nigerians Condemn Beating Of 2 Women For Alleged Theft

Nigerians have condemned the brutal beating of two women who were allegedly accused of theft, after a video showing the incident surfaced online.

In the footage, the women are seen being brutally assaulted by a group of other women, with the alleged punishment taking place outside the formal justice system.

The incident has sparked outrage, with many Nigerians describing the assault as jungle justice and questioning why the suspects were subjected to such violence instead of being handed over to the police.

The video has also generated concern over the decision to record and circulate the assault, while bystanders allegedly encouraged or failed to stop the violence.

Reacting to the footage, social media users expressed shock at the level of brutality and called for the perpetrators to be identified and prosecuted.

@Banky_moon condemned those involved, arguing that the attackers appeared to have surrendered to their violent instincts while also recording the incident for social media.

“The devil is so clever, and idiots he will use on a daily basis. And destroy them after using them.
“You are brutalizing someone and having a video of it and posting it for the world to see.

“In one hand you are being used to use your base instinct of violence against another human that you are brutalizing and on the other hand, your village people still hold your sense that you also seek some viral moment on the internet that you have no issue carrying out such evil in front of camera and having it posted online,” the user posted.

@King_Nego also questioned the identity of the attackers and called for their arrest, expressing particular concern over women participating in the assault.

“What state is this why women are the most wicked and heartless being? See how women are humiliating same genders like they are so bad and heartless genders. Those animals should be arrested. What are the Nigerian police and other forces doing???”

Meanwhile, @Alaricfurniture described the incident as “madness” and demanded that those responsible face severe punishment.

“This is madness. This evil act must not go unpunished. This is heartbreaking, disturbing, disgusting, and highly inhuman.

“Those behind this evil act should be jailed for good 10 years with hard labour & humanitarian services after serving behind bars.”

@Naija2cap, however, stressed that even if the women were guilty of stealing, assaulting them was not a legitimate form of justice.

“Stealing is wrong, but treating people like that isn’t justice either. Recover the items and let the police handle it. Glad someone is saying this out loud.”

Human rights activist VeryDarkMan has also called for the arrest of those involved in the assault. He also offered ₦1 million to anyone who can provide credible information that would lead to the identification of the perpetrators.

The incident has renewed calls for Nigerians to stop taking alleged crimes into their own hands and allow law enforcement agencies to investigate accusations and prosecute suspects through due process.
