Nigeria has appointed its Ambassador and Permanent Representative to Austria and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Dr Florence Ajimobi, as the country’s Governor on the IAEA Board of Governors for the 2026–2028 term.
The appointment follows Nigeria’s election to the influential 35-member Board during the 70th Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Austria.
Ajimobi disclosed this in a pictorial she shared via her social media handle on Saturday, September 19.
As Nigeria’s representative on the Board and its committees, Ajimobi is expected to participate in deliberations on the agency’s programmes, nuclear safety and security, safeguards, peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology, and international cooperation.

She will also articulate and advance Nigeria’s positions during Board meetings and contribute to discussions shaping the IAEA’s policies and activities.
Nigeria’s election to the Board is expected to strengthen the country’s engagement with the agency and provide a broader platform for international cooperation on the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology.
The technology has potential applications in areas including healthcare, agriculture, food security, water-resource management and human-capacity development.
Ajimobi, who is also Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Austria and Permanent Representative to other international organisations in Vienna, will use the assignment to advance Nigeria’s interests within the global nuclear governance framework.
The appointment comes as Nigeria continues to pursue international partnerships aimed at expanding the responsible application of nuclear science and technology to support its national development objectives.
