The Niger State Government has declared three days of mourning following the deaths of suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The government has also postponed the planned flag-off of its General Election campaign in the wake of the incident.
The NSCDC confirmed that some of the suspects arrested during operations against illegal mining in M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto Village were found dead in the early hours of Thursday, September 17.
The Corps said the cause of death was yet to be established, with the bodies deposited at the General Hospital, Minna, for medical examination.
The development has prompted the state government to suspend its planned political activity as it observes the mourning period.
