LP Disowns Ex-National Publicity Secretary Over Suit Seeking Obi’s Academic, NYSC Records

The Labour Party (LP) has disowned its former National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, over his legal action seeking access to the academic and service records of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The party said Arabambi ceased to be a member following his suspension and subsequent expulsion over alleged anti-party activities.

The LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, made this known in a statement on Monday, warning that any attempt by Arabambi to present himself as a representative or chieftain of the party was unauthorised.

According to Asogwa, Arabambi is among 25 members suspended by the party’s National Executive Council in March 2026.

He said the suspension was later ratified at the party’s national convention held on April 28, 2026, after which the affected members ceased to be members of the LP.

The clarification follows reports linking Arabambi to three separate suits filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)over Obi’s academic and service records.

“While the Labour Party wishes to refrain from commenting on the substance or otherwise of the litigant’s case before the court, particularly as Mr. Peter Obi is not a member of the party, we wish to notify the general public that Abayomi Arabambi is not a member of the Labour Party,” Asogwa said.

The party further stated that no organ has revisited or reversed the decision suspending and expelling the affected members.

It consequently warned that Arabambi had no authority to act or speak on behalf of the LP.

“If Arabambi has presented himself to the public as a chieftain or representative of the Labour Party, the general public is hereby notified that such representation is entirely unauthorised and, prima facie, amounts to impersonation,” the party said.

The LP added that its lawyers were reviewing the situation and considering possible legal action, including a petition to law enforcement authorities.

Arabambi had filed the suits under the Freedom of Information Act, asking the court to compel WAEC, UNN and NYSC to release official records relating to certificates allegedly issued to Obi.

However, he maintained that he was not asking the court to determine whether the certificates Obi submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 presidential election were genuine or forged.

Rather, Arabambi said his request is aimed at obtaining existing records that could establish the status and particulars of the certificates.

The development came shortly after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) dismissed Arabambi’s suits and challenged him to produce evidence suggesting that Obi’s academic credentials were questionable.
