A 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse in a drainage channel during rainfall in Meiran, Lagos.

The Lagos State Government disclosed this in a statement via its X handle on Friday.

According to the statement, Monday was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, for dumping waste in the drain during the rain.

She was subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to one month in prison.

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly dumping refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.

The authority described such acts as “environmental offences that attract sanctions under the law.”

LAWMA said it would continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to “identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos.”
