A prominent figure in Lagos politics, Cardinal James Omolaja Odunmbaku, popularly known as Baba Eto, has clocked 80.
Odunmbaku, who celebrated his birthday on Friday, September 4, was born in 1946 and has spent decades playing prominent roles in Lagos’ political and social landscape.
Fondly referred to as Baba Eto, he is regarded as one of the influential political elders and grassroots mobilisers within the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State.
His political journey dates back to the era of NADECO and the struggle for the actualisation of the June 12, 1993 presidential mandate.
Over the years, Odunmbaku has remained a key figure in Lagos APC politics and a leader of the Mandate Group, one of the major political tendencies within the party in the state.
His reputation for political organisation and mobilisation reportedly earned him the nickname “Baba Eto,” a name said to have been given to him by the late businessman and winner of the annulled 1993 Presidential Election, Chief MKO Abiola.
Beyond politics, the 80-year-old is also a cleric and philanthropist. He is the founder and presiding priest of the Celestial Church of Christ, City of God, Akiode, Lagos.
His contribution to public life was further recognised in 2022 when he was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, MFR.
