Kano to establish more military bases in bandit-prone LGAs

Following the recent infiltration of armed bandits into some local government areas in Kano State, the state governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has said the Federal Government has agreed to establish more military bases in key Local Government Areas (LGAs) to protect lives and property.

Speaking on the development, the Kano State Commissioner for Local Government, Alhaji Muhammad Taju Usman, said that following a meeting held on September 5, 2026, between the governor, the 44 local government council chairmen, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Accountant-General of Kano State, it was agreed that new military bases were urgently needed.

He said, “after extensive deliberations on matters relating to security, infrastructure, and human capital development across the state, the meeting resolved for the strengthening of security architecture in the state.”

The commissioner hinted that Governor Yusuf and the Minister of Defence had already met and agreed that, in addition to the existing security architecture in the state, comprising the Nigeria Police Force and the Neighbourhood Watch, forest guards and additional military bases would be established in LGAs identified as being prone to security challenges.

He added that the initiative was intended to strengthen security, improve rapid response to threats, protect communities, and enhance the safety of lives and property across the affected LGAs. 

Similarly, he said the governor’s meeting with the local government chairmen and other officials also resolved that contracts for the establishment and provision of Computer-Based Test (CBT) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centres in each of the 44 LGAs had been awarded, and work would commence immediately.

He said the aim of the ICT and CBT centres in the 44 LGAs, for which contracts worth N27.8 billion had been awarded, was to allow students sitting JAMB and other examinations to have unhindered access to the internet.

“It was resolved that one rural ambulance shall be provided to each ward across the state to improve access to emergency and basic healthcare services, furthermore, two drivers shall be employed for each ambulance, with preference given to qualified persons from the respective wards.

“It was resolved that electric vehicle charging points shall be established at strategic locations within the Kano State capital as a pilot initiative, with the programme to be expanded as necessary,” he added.

Governor Yusuf also agreed that 50 special reporters would be appointed for each LGA, alongside 35 advisers for the LG chairmen, with 15 positions allocated to members of the former APC structure, as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots engagement, communication, and effective administration.

According to Usman, “all relevant ministries, departments, agencies, local government councils, and other stakeholders were urged to ensure the immediate and effective implementation of the resolutions.”
